Breast Changes in Pregnancy

I am a doctor. I have been working in this field for 5 years. Today, I will talk to you about the changes in the breast.

It is very normal for the breasts to change during pregnancy. The changes can be of various types. There’s nothing to worry about.

What do breast changes mean?

Breast changes during pregnancy usually occur naturally. The size of the breast increases, and the skin becomes sensitive. The nipple and the surrounding area may darken. The milk-producing glands inside the breast become active, and in some cases, white or golden liquid may leak from the nipple. The number of blood vessels in the skin of the breast increases, creating a new pattern. These changes are part of preparing for motherhood and are normal.

How many types of breast changes are there?

Breast changes can be of various types. The main changes include: increase in size and swelling, nipple and areolar changes, colostrum production, etc.

  1. Why do the size and swelling increase? During pregnancy, the level of hormones increases, which enlarges the breast tissue, causing the breast to swell. The milk-producing glands in the breast begin to activate, causing the breast size to increase.

What can result from this?

  • The breasts feel heavier than before.
  • In some cases, there might be a tight sensation and slight pain in the breasts, which is normal.
  • In some cases, stretch marks might appear on the skin.
  • The increase in breast size may cause discomfort.
  1. Nipple and areolar changes During pregnancy, changes in the nipple and areola occur due to hormonal changes. First, let’s understand what the areola is. The areola is the dark circular area surrounding the nipple. During pregnancy, the size of the nipple and areola increases. Additionally, small bumps might appear on the areola, known as Montgomery glands. As the time of delivery approaches, milk might leak from the nipple, and it may become painful to touch. These changes are primarily due to the process of milk production in the breast.
  2. Colostrum production Colostrum production mainly refers to the production of milk in the breast. As the delivery date approaches, the breast produces an increased amount of milk, leading to milk leakage. This is beneficial for your baby, as it contains a high amount of vitamins. The milk production from your breasts will stop within 3-4 days after childbirth. In some mothers, it may take longer, but the normal duration is 3-4 days. If it lasts longer, you can use a breast pump.
