What is the Baby Head Soft Spot?
The soft spot on a newborn’s head is commonly known as the “fontanel.” There are two types:
- Anterior Fontanelle: Located at the front and top of the head, this area is usually larger.
- Posterior Fontanelle: Located at the back of the head, this area is smaller and typically closes more quickly.
The fontanel is a soft and flexible area between the bones of the skull, present at birth and during the first few months. It is essential for the normal growth of the baby’s head. Although it may cause concern for some parents, it is a natural part of development.
Why Does the Fontanel Exist?
The fontanel is necessary for the normal development of the baby’s head. It allows for changes in head shape, supports the rapid growth of the brain, and provides space for the natural development of the skull bones.
How Long Does the Fontanel Remain?
Since there are two types of fontanels, their durations vary:
- Anterior Fontanelle: Typically closes between 12 to 18 months.
- Posterior Fontanelle: Generally closes within 2 to 3 months.
The fontanel is a normal feature, and there is no reason to worry about it. It is present in every baby, and its absence would be a concern. Stay healthy and take care of your baby.
